Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist (RT) 2 serves as a role model and resource that assists and supports the clinical team. They help to ensure consistently high-quality care and facilitate excellent clinical respiratory care services. The RT 2 is responsible for providing direct patient care and assessment; interdisciplinary consultation, oversight for technical and clinical performance, support clinical activity of staff as directed by leadership and performance improvement monitoring. Clinicians provide a full range of cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients of all age groups. They obtain, review and interpret data and assess the need for and response to respiratory care interventions in consultation and conjunction with medical, nursing and other disciplines to optimize patient care planning and delivery. They respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies, provide airway maintenance, manual and mechanical ventilator support using a variety of devices and techniques and administer oxygen and other therapeutic gases, humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion therapies and instruct patient's family and continuing care providers in the administration of respiratory procedures and the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. The RT 2 assures that ventilators are patient ready and calibrated, sent to Clinical Engineering as appropriate and help assure that medical supplies and equipment are available for patient care. In the absence of a Respiratory Care Supervisor 2 the RT 2 functions as a relief supervisor. The RT 2 may be asked, per operational needs, to focus their leadership and educational duties for periods of time on relief charge, precepting, training and education, mentorship, or specialty areas of practice such as pediatric care.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Current and valid California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
  • Current and valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within six (6) months of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an RCP in an acute care hospital
  • Possesses the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of respiratory care procedures.
  • Current with all mandatory Hospital and Department required competencies.
  • Knowledgeable of and complies with all applicable infection control and health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and the Medical Center.
  • Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning.
  • Assists other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients, visitors
  • Demonstrates effectiveness in spoken and written communications
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time management practices
  • Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments
  • Prioritizes patient's care based on: emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, routine care
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with all team members
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with intra and inter departmental teams.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, e-mail, E.M.R., Word.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach and mentor.
  • Working knowledge of basic management regarding chain of command, and conflict resolution.
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Continuing maintenance and development of clinical skills and technical competency. in Adult/Pediatric, Emergency and Trauma respiratory care, applications, procedures and equipment
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (JCAHO, Title 22, HCFA, CMS


Preferred Qualifications

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)/American Heart Association (AHA) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Prior experience and demonstrated abilities in performance improvement processes, team leader, planning and conducting in-service education and training
