Our Organization and Mission:   The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States.

 

Position Summary: This position is in the Office of the Attorney General within the Consumer Protection Division in Tallahassee, Florida. This AAG position r epresents the Office of the Attorney General, Department of Legal Affairs, in trial and appellate courts and administrative tribunals in proceedings relating to Chapters 501, 542, 812, 817, 895, and 932 of the Florida Statutes, the Florida Administrative Code, and other state and federal laws enforced or relevant to cases filed by the Office of the Attorney General.  

 

Pay: $97,443.06 Annually

 

Qualifications:  

Admission to the Florida Bar and two (2) years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings.

The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States.

Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class.

 

NOTE: Applicants with certified legal intern experience will be credited on a month to month basis toward meeting the minimum experience requirement. Those with other legal internship experience will be credited on a month to month basis, up to a maximum of 3 months.

 

Preference will be given to attorneys with:

  • 3 or more years of experience handling civil litigation cases
  • 2 or more years of experience handling the prosecution or defense of cases involving fraud, deceptive trade practices or white-collar crime cases.

 

The Work You Will Do:   The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Participates and oversees investigations of potential consumer protection violations by individuals and/or corporate entities; identifies relevant legal issues for matters being investigated; oversees the gathering of evidence by investigators; reviews reports prepared by law enforcement officers, investigators, accountants, and financial analysts; and evaluates documentary and other evidence necessary to prepare the matter for resolution or appropriate legal proceedings.
  • Conducts litigation of consumer protection cases in state and federal courts, including drafting pleadings, motions, memoranda of law and briefs; prepares legal research and evaluates the research of investigators and paralegals; prepares subpoenas, conducts discovery, and engages in other pretrial and trial work. Attends trials, hearings, and appellate oral arguments in court. Computer use is required for the preparation of pleadings, briefs, and other documents.
  • Negotiates resolutions of litigation cases or investigations and drafts resolution documents such as assurances of voluntary compliance, consent judgments, and mediated resolutions. 
  • Participates with other states through the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) by representing the State of Florida in multistate investigations and litigation.
  • Conducts legal research and may assist in reviewing proposed legislation.
  • Responds to correspondence and telephone inquiries concerning consumer protection issues. 
  • Represents the Department in meetings and conferences relating to consumer protection investigations and litigation. Establishes lines of communication with local, state, and federal law enforcement officers and prosecutors; serves on federal and state task forces and works with those agencies, as needed; initiates contact with and processes information from law enforcement agencies to further consumer protection enforcement.
  • Performs routine administrative functions, which may include supervising legal secretaries, paralegals, and interns; attends staff meetings; prepares time records and case status reports; oversees case management and directs case progress, files documents, etc.
  • May assist and advise attorneys in trial practice, pleading, and procedures. 
  • Maintains current expertise in areas of practice, including reading recent judicial decisions and case summaries and attends continuing legal education and other professional seminars. 
  • Performs in a timely fashion other assigned duties, which may require extended hours and/or travel outside the worksite.
